Humulus lupulus: Hops

Humulus lupulus, commonly known as hops, is a climbing vine grown primarily for its flowers, which are used to flavour beer. Hops are dioecious, meaning male and female flowers occur on separate plants. Because pollinated flowers are lower in quality, only female plants are cultivated for commercial production.

Hops are fast-growing and can reach heights of up to 10 metres while living for up to 20 years. Once established, they can produce quality harvests for many years before requiring replacement with more vigorous plants. Hops thrives in full sun and prefers rich, well-draining soil with a pH between 6.5 and 8.0. For optimal growth, use coco coir as the growing medium and feed with a complete, well-balanced nutrient programme, such as those offered by Green Planet. Hops require plenty of space to grow, so allow 1.5–2 metres between plants and provide sturdy support with a trellis.

The female hop flowers are rich in essential oils, alpha acids, beta acids, and flavonoids, which are responsible for their distinctive aroma, beer-flavouring qualities, and traditional medicinal uses. Research suggests that alpha and beta acids possess antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. Ongoing studies are also investigating their potential role in supporting cardiovascular health and reducing the risk of certain cancers. Additional research suggests that hops may help reduce menopausal symptoms and menstrual discomfort, support healthy skin, and assist in managing obesity and acne. The acids, essential oils, and flavonoids found in hops may also promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, and support restful sleep. To help maximise essential oil production, we recommend using Green Planet's Rezin.

Hop flowers can be consumed in several forms, including liquid extracts and tinctures, capsules, herbal teas, and aromatherapy products. Care should be taken when using hops for their traditional medicinal properties, as they may interact with central nervous system depressants and oestrogen-based therapies. Always seek professional medical advice before using hops for medicinal purposes.
